Reviews - External Forces

WINNER - Next Generation Indie Book Award - Young Adult
FINALIST - ForeWord Book Of The Year Award - Science Fiction

Kirkus Reviews ...a magnificently imagined world and intriguing characters. Rix engagingly plays out Jess and Matt’s relationship with subtle touches, longing looks and playful banter. She also effectively challenges her young readers to face difficult questions—what does “human” mean, and who should decide?—while ably setting the stage for an upcoming sequel.

ForeWord Reviews This dystopian story is tightly crafted with a well-developed landscape of danger and mystery. Set in a dystopian future ruled by religious fanatics and a cruel military, External Forces is a fascinating, exciting fantasy. 5 stars

The Busy Book Belle It’s not often that I come across a story that has me so riveted from beginning to end that I denounce sleep—especially when sleep is a precious and rare commodity in my life these days. “External Forces” falls into this category, and then some. 5 Stars

Touch of Book Madness This story is enticing and thrilling. It grabs you from page one and it keeps going all the way to the end. It has the perfect mix of suspense, mystery, action and love, not leaving behind issues like real friendship and loyalty. 5 Hats

Paperback Wonderland SCIENCE! This book got it right! It's so rare! I have
no words... I'm actually getting emotional here... Rix really did the
research on social darwinism and eugenics, epigenetics, the dangers of genetically modified crops - which result in a lack of genetic diversity in
seeds that could prove catastrophic in the event of a disease or calamity - how can there be survival of the fittest if all the crops are the same? What would we do if a disease turns up and none of our crops were fit to fight it? The science was A+   4 Stars

Insomnia Strikes The thing I really liked about this storyline was that even though the world in this book was very different from what we live in today, it still felt realistic. The author did a great job of creating a dystopian world and the problems faced by the characters were very brutal, I felt myself fearing for them and silently urging them on.

Krypton Radio Sci-Fi for your Wi-Fi This book is everything you could want in a YA dystopian novel, and it’s only book one of a trilogy!...there’s also romance (refreshingly minus the love triangle!), plus starting from chapter one, serious life-or-death situations. Ms. Rix does not shy away from ruthless killing or gore and, it’s fantastic; it serves to show the terror of the dystopia the characters live in.

Helena S Karlsson This book felt like an inspiration among the flood of dystopian novels that have been published these last few years and it made for compulsive reading and I am looking forward to the sequel.

Giant Squid Books...this series will have the potential to not only be an engaging read, but to confront important and tough themes. I look forward to seeing where Deborah Rix takes Jess Grant and her world next.

What an awesome debut! With hints at Lauren Oliver's Delirium series, Deborah Rix has crafted a new and intriguing post-apocalyptic world.
